CUMBRIAN INTERLUDE: Cumbrian Coast

Abbeytown, Cumbria. August 2010


 
 The nave of Holme Cultram Abbey was retained for use as a village church when the Abbey was dissolved in 1538

 It was badly damaged by fire started by local youths a few years ago, but has largely been restored

 It was also a place where locals could go for refuge against raids by Border Reivers

 

  The churchyard contains a few stones with interesting motifs
 
 

On this gravestone, the sun and the moon flank the eye, dividers (compass) and set square above a book 

 

The moon surrounded by stars 

Another nearby stone with masonic symbols - compass and set square - perhaps a third order mason

 

Stones from the Abbey were used to build the village
