More Thames Path

Charlton to Belvedere, London. Monday 25 April 2011

I950s sewage treatment plant at Crossness

Thames Water is spending £220m to upgrade the plant to increase capacity by 44% so that raw sewage

will be discharged much less often when it rains

The 1998 sludge incinerator, an elegant swan-like metal structure

Southern Outfall with treated sewage almost certainly purer than the rest of the river

The new sludge incinerator looks like a cheap copy of the earlier one

Crossness is an important bird site, both on the river and behind on the marshes where there is a nature reserve

Looking across to Ford, still making diesel engines

Ford ferry landing stage - the new incinerator is where workers parked their cars to take the ferry

Looking downstream to silos at Rainham

I left the river here and rode to Belvedere to catch the train
