Solidarity vigil for Shawki Ahmed Omar

Elavston Place, London. Wed 19 Feb 2014

Omar''s wife was pregnant when they were both arrested in 2004

She was released after 16 days but he is still held in jail in Iraq.. Zeinab has never seen her father

At first Omar, who has joint US Jordanian citizenship was held by US forces. Before leaving Iraq they handed him over to the Iraqis

Omar remained in prison despite legal attempts in the US for him to be freed

Omar was tried without notice or legal representation in 2010 and sentenced to 15 years, reduced to 7 on appeal

for allegedly entering Iraq illegally as a Palestinian citizen (which he is not) He has already served over 9 years

and has been on hunger strike. His wife and daughter have held regular vigils outside the US embassy.
