Ash Wednesday Act of Resistance

Defence Ministry, London. Wed 5 March 2014

Outside the Ministry of Defence, water was used to write the word 'REPENT' iin large letters on the pavement

When the word was complete the letters were also marked with charcoal

People held up a mini-banner reading 'No Trident'

and then came and added ashes to the word repent.

After singing together and sharing the blessing the silent procession moved on into the public garden

on the river side of the Ministry of Defence where the liturgy continued

As the liturgy came to an end, people spread out along the fence, and when they were there, said the Lord's Prayer together
We knew at least one person would then try to mark the building with a cross, but didn't know exactly when and where

The police were spread out, but managed to tackle the man who jumped over the railings before he reached the wall

They held him, then one officer led him away

but as he passed the steps he managed to twist to one side

and mark the wall with a cross

Police again led him away, but released him five minutes or so later

Another man was arrested.
He had managed to get inside the doorway to the Old War Office and write on the wall there

Police would not let me in to see if he had managed to complete the word 'REPENT' and told me I must not
take photographs as this was a protected place. Not very well protected I thought if people can come in and
write 'REPENT' on the wall. And I had already taken this picture from the public highway, so I didn't bother
to ask the officer under what law he thought it was an offence to photograph as I was pretty certain it was
only the law of hurt police pride.
