Canal St is the busy main road (A590) to Ulverston

and it leads to the basin of the Ulverston Canal

Which isn't really as large as it looks in this picture

The canal, built to bring largish vessels to the town from the Leven estuary claims to be the deepest,

widest and straightest canal in the UK. It is shallower and narrower than the Manchester Ship Canal and

at 1 mile 3 furlongs (2.2km) is longer than the Wardle Lock Branch of the Trent & Mersey Canal, but it is straight

Opened in 1796, it closed in 1945,
