Call for a Greater Hungary

Downing St, London. Sat 4 Jun 2016

I wasn't sure what to make of the protesters callilng for a greater Hungary

The 1920 border agreement redrew the boundary of Hungary so that areas with a majority Hungarian population

were in Hungary, but those areas where Hungarians were in a minority were outside. On paper it seems a very sensible settlement, but it did leave

many ethnic Hungarians in other countries. So the idea that it was like dismembering the UK seems nonsense.

But if Hungarians in other countries are discriminated against, prevented from speaking their language and

celebrating their culture, then that is clearly unjust.

The gold and blue flags are Székely flags and there is quite a large area in the middle of Romania - not adjacent to

the Hungarian border - with a majority of Szeklers.

I don't know the significance of the red and green flag with the Hungarian coat of arms; the crown suggests it is a monarchist emblem.
A similar flag has been used by some Jobbik supporters

but the red white and green flag with it on is one of many variations of the 'Hungary with crest' flag
