Brixton Arches & More

Brixton, London. Sat 8 Oct 2016

Big Splash mural on the corner of Glenelg Rd - painted in 1985 with many local characters included

Art Deco Sunlight Laundry on Acre Lane - still in use as a Laundry as well as housing other businesses

built in the 1920s as the offices of New Imperial Laundry, also at one time Pall Mall Cleaners

Since 2014 has been known at Berendsons.

Unfortunately Pevsner didn't appreciate what he felt were debased modern styles, though the building gets

a few words in the 'London: South' volume there are no details. It suggests it is a 1930s date which I suspect may be correct.

A well-known building it is curiously omitted from lists of London deco buildings I've found, but is a good example

 Next door something more modern

The Cedars, Acre Lane, built around 1815 and at around 1900 a school for mentally defective children"

 Acre Lane

Formerly Trinity Asylum, built in 1822 for "pious aged women, whose lives and conversations give evidence that they have passed from death into life by faith in Jesus Christ."

 Acre Lane

 Atlantic Rd - Brixton Arches
