LSE cleaners strike for equality and dignity

The pprotest took place on the street outside the LSE library
Noonan employs the cleaners at the LSE and the cleaners get low pay,
low status and terrible management
and the UVW is taking them to tribunals over unfair dismissal and
other matters
Noonan got the contract by making a lower tender - and then tried
to work the cleaners harder
The cleaners say they want the same terms and conditions as people
in similar roles who are LSE employees
They work in the same place and deserve equal treatment. Their claims
are supported by students and LSE staff.
Trenton Oldfield has brought his daughter with him to show solidarity
with the cleaners
LSE Security have closed the area in front of the library normally
open to the public. The road is a public highway
Speeches explain why the cleaners are striking and cleaners lead some
chanting for equal treatment
One police officer starts harassing Sid Skill who has come to show
solidarity. Sid refuses to talk to him and moves away
but the officer keeps following him around and questioning him
Sid asks him to stop harassing him, but he continues, trying to take
him to one side and question him
everyone at the protest tells the officer he is harassing Sid and
asks him to stop, including Trenton Oldfield
and as I take photographs I also ask him why he is harassing Sid -
but he simply denies the obvious
The LSE head of security says he has no influence on the police. Sid
feels he is about to be arrested and rushes
away - and is followed by two police officers, until he escapes by jumping
on a bus as the doors are closing.
Workers from nearby Kings College arrive to show solidarity
as do more frorm Class War - and the officer who had been harassing
Sid moves them off the road
A woman who works in the LSE comes to tell the cleaners they are making
a lot of noise and disturbing her day
and then hugs the police officer and smiles when she sees I am photographing
her. The cleaners say they have
to make a lot of noise as the LSE management refuse to talk with them and
their union.
They tell her to go and complain to the managers.and get them to talk and
continue their noisy protest
