IWGB protest London University outsourcing

IWGB members and supporters came to the pavement outside the front
entrance to Senate House
where guests for the Foundation Day event with University of London
Chancellor Princess Anne were due to
arrive.
Many workers in the University are now employed by out-sourcing companies
who treat them badly with pay
and conditions of service lower than people in similar jobs directly
employed by the university would get.
A samba band made sure the protest was heard both outside and inside
the building
Quite a large crowd had come for the protest to support the out-sourced
workers, who include security guards,
porters, cleaners and catering staff. Security staff in the IWGB have
been taking part in a number of one day
strikes. People coming to the event had to walk past the protest to
show their tickets to hired security at the
entrance. Some of those going to the event were clearly angered at
the protest, while a few stopped to talk with
protesters.
When most people had arrived the protesters took a walk around the
building. There was a romour that
Princess Anne was due to arrive at another door, but there was no
sign of her. Probably she had come earlier
The IWGB was supported by students from the University and other unions
including the UCU London Region
Strikers from the Picturehouse cinemas demanding a living wage came
to give support
along with students from the LSE who have campaigned for their cleaners
to be properly treated and brought in house.
After protesting at the east entrance to Senate House the protesters
walked around Russell Square
and then march back to the main entrance
