Cleaners rush into Royal College of Music

Royal College of Music, London. Thu 25 Jan 2018

People unload the flags and placards from the coach just around the corner from the Royal College of Music

and get ready to go there

they rush into the door - and I get carried along in the rush

 more come in behind me

 Once inside they protest noisily

calling for fair contracts and for their rights to be recognised.

The cleaners are refusing to sign new contracts which would cut their hours and which also

alter the shift times. Cleaners work several part-time jobs and many are already working elsewhere at the

times Tenon FM say they must work. They are under threat of dismissal if they do not sign the new contracts.

Tenon FM took over the cleaners from their previous employer when the Royal College of Music gave them the contract

and under legislation about the transfer of companies (TUPE) they should respect the cleaners' existing contracts

They write a couple of messages on the back of time sheets at the reception desk

and hang flags on two statues, but are careful not to cause any damage.

This one is Edward VII and the bunch of bananas in his hand is meant to be his silly hat

A few people in the building come to see what is happening and take photos on their phones
