Lambeth Council opens fake Carnegie library

Carnegie Library, Herne Hill, London. Thu 15 Feb 2018

I arrived early at the library, but some campaigners were already outside and it was raining

The public were not going to be let in for another hour

 'I Love Books'

Fortunately the rain soon stopped, but a low sun shining over the library roof made photographs difficult

 'Stop Eating Our Libraries'

'Libraries For the Many - Not Gyms For The Few'

'Hoot for the Library' and most passing motorists hooted - and were greeted with cheers

'GLL (Greenwich Leisure Ltd) Kills Lambeth Libraries - £4 Million Waster on Gyms' and the amount is rising

Lambeth Green Party - and Lambeth's only Green Party councillor Scott Ainslie (right) were there to support the protest

The main hall is only a temporary library space - it is to become a hireable space - but with very limited facilities

 'Don't Steal Our Libraries'

The Metropolitan Borough of Lambeth asked Andrew Carnegie for money to build a branch library for Herne Hill

and Tulse Hill in 1902. He did so after being assured that the borough would properly maintain it for community use

48 architects were asked to provide designs and 25 responded, with that by H Wakeford & Sons being accepted

The library opened in 1905. It's a fine building of its age and was Grade II listed in 1981.

It was the first such library to be built with an open-access system, where readers could go to the shelves themselves

to chose their books, rather than having to ask a librarian. Others soon followed.

Lambeth first tried ot close the library in 1999; locals formed the Friends of Carnegie Library and succeded in keeping it open

Unison officials talk with a library manager (centre) who doesn't want to let them carry out a safety check

the discussion continues with another library manager
