Lea Valley Walk

Harpenden to Hatfield, Herts. Wed 4 Apr 2018

Some more from St Helen's Church, Wheathampstead

A memorial to the man who wrote the book about Scott's Arctic exploration

Outside was a memorial to a man who died in 1722 with he same name as my eldest brother (who died around 1965)

I took a walk around the 'village' while the others were still finishing their lunches

Apparently there used to be 27 pubs here. There are now two in the centre of the village. By the River Lea is a

steak house, The Miller & Carter, which also has a sign calling itself 'The Bull'

 and The Swan.

Some of the former pub buildings remain, including this shop.

We left Wheathampstead going past this green shed beside the River Lea

and through an area of parkland

but were soon in angling country again, the public footpath a short distance from the meandering river

A tunnel took us under the B653

and the path lead through the fields

and back close to the river, though again the land beside it is private

 considerable meandering on this stretch

with the river sometimes close to the path

The path climbs up a hill
