Woolwich wander

Falconwood to North Woolwich, London. Mon 28 May 2018

Major Robert John Little's fountain erected after his death in 1861 and dedicated to the public is now dry and has lost the pipes and basins.

Grade II listed it has two bibtle quotes. It was hot and I could have done with a drink. Of course I had a bottle of water with me.

The Royal Artillery Barracks seen through a gate from Ha Ha Road. There is a thick hedge along much of the ha-ha

a landscape feature designed to present an unhindered view. Further along the hedge does give out

and we can see across the ha-ha ditch.

The rear of Charlton House with a more modern extension

 Charlton House

 with its fine doorway

and on the lawn in front an ornamental gate

These public toilets, built in keeping with the house, are now closed

Maryon Wilson Park and part of what used to be known as Hanging Woods, probably because of its steep

wooded slopes. Though it was a popular hangout for highwaymen, if caught they would be hung in a more public

place, probably on the Dover road itself. There are some extensive views through the trees, but limited by the
haze. London's pollution means the air is clear only immediately after heavy rain.

The footpath into Maryon Park, like Maryon Wilson Park given to the LCC in 1890by the Maryon-Wilson family

It was a worked out quarry, for chalk, sand and gravel. The steps were constructed in 1909 after the LCC had

bought a further small area to allow access from the south.

I think the park is a little more overgrown than when it featured in 'Blow Up'

We came out of the park at its north-east onto the Woolwich Rd at Cleverly Close

 Woolwich Rd

 Looking down Woolwich Church St

Warspite Road. There are steps to the river at the end but no riverside path and we didn't go down there

Ruston Rd and the entry to McDonalds. We walked past.
