University of London staff in-House now
Senate House, London. Tue 6 May 2018
At the end of a long day of picketing workers and supporters pose
in front of the gates in Russell Square
Before they go and make a lot of noise at the gates to the bottom
of Senate House itself, which are firmly
padlocked. The university has brought in extra security to replace
those on strike - and fighting their staff has
apparently cost them over £400,000 - wasted money when they
could have talked with the union and come
to a sensible settlement. Jason Myoer-Lee of the IWGB speaks
and others make a lot of noise
A UCU rep who came to bring support from the Liverpool branch speaks
before he has to catch his train home
The workers want to do a good job, to be paid reasonably and get decent
conditions of service and to be treated
with dignity and respect. Outsourcing means they are over-worked,
underpaid, get minimum legal conditions and
are treated like dirt. They want a decent employer - the University
of London itself, to be brought back 'in-house'.
They march around the building, beating drums
waving flags
and carrying placards and psoters
'University of London - Shame on YOU!'
Jason Moyer-Lee of the IWGB on the steps of Stewart House introduces
Chip Hamer (Grim Chip) of Poetry on the Picket Line, who performs
several of his poems
to widespread appreciation.
Poetry on the Picket Line also contributes to strike funds
