Matlock & Lumsdale

Matlock, Derbys. Sat 29 Dec 2018

We were waiting for around 20 minutes for my son to arrive on the main road in Matlock Green and I took

several pictures of the shop and garage opposite

and of the Red Lion where we were staying - comfortable and very friendly - and some good local beer

The funeral directors opposite was Thomas Greatorex and Sons, in business since 1892

Almshouses 'To the Glory of God' and in memory of William Harrison, built by his sister to "provide rest for the aged poor"

They date from 1897-8. By Willam Doxey

St Giles on the top of a hill in Old Matlock. The first record of a church here was in 1296. There has been
considerable rebuilding since, particularly in the nineteenth century.

I walked up a footpath from Matlock Green towards Lumsdale

and didn't turn down this path, though I came up it on my way back to Matlock

The path ends on Lumsdale Road opposite Tansley Wood Mills

Bentley Brook flows down next to the road

Lumsdale Mill is still in use

The Lower Bleach Mill is at the bottom end of the Arkwright Society's area

The Bentley Brook descends steeply beside the Upper Bleach Mill

There is no access to either the Lower Bleach Mill

 or the Upper Bleach Mill

A path with steps and a rail leads up beside the stream

and you can clamber down a more dangerous path beside the stream, with slippery muddy areas

The path I came down is at the left of the picture. There were other photographers, including some standing in the stream just behind me

I took a lot of pictures - just a few of them here. A slightly slower shutter speed gives some blurring of the water, without removing all the spray

I climbed back up to here and waited for other photographers to get out of my way

then walked further up on the official path.

The ruins here are I think from another mill, the Grinding Mill

And I could look down from the top of the falls I had been photographing - and on other photographers still at the
top of the rough path I had clambered down, and, just visible, a couple of others where I had gone down.
