Matlock & High Tor

Matlock, Derbys. Sat 29 Dec 2018

 Snitterton Rd

 Looking back towards Matlock

Bank Road goes up the centre of the picture

 High Tor

St John the Baptist's was built in 1897 for Mrs Louisa Sophia Harris, designed by Guy Dawber, now looked after by the Friends of Friendless  Churches and only open on heritage days. There is a spring feeding the trough and the chapel appears built into the rocks.

 High Tor

 Rock House

A narrow path led down to the houses on the track below - but I didn't take it

from the main road a footbridge goes across the River Derwent

It leads to a path up High Tor. On the hilltop above is Riber Castle, built by by the industrialist John Smedley
in 1862 as his home and known as 'Smedley's Folly'.

On the way up High Tor there were views through the trees to Matlock

 St John the Baptist

 The view from High Tor

The War Memorial on Pic Tor, overlooking Matlock

and the view of Matlock from Pic Tor, obscured by branches

Pic Tor from beside the River Derwent
