Vedanta Zambian pollution appeal

Supreme Court, London. Tue 15th Jan 2019

Two campaigners had stayed outside to hold the banner while the morning session was taking place

Vedanta lost the case and the High Court appeal and campaigners hope the Supreme Court will also uphold the

finding that Vedanta, a company registered in the UK can be taken to court here for the actions of their subsidiary in Zambia

Campaigners who have been listening to the case come out for lunch

 but first they pose outside

holding posters about Konkola Copper Mines, owned by Vedanta, who have polluted the River Kafue since 2004

with excessive levels of copper, cobalt and manganese, causing sickness and deaths, birth deformities and

damage to property and loss of income.

1,826 farmers from Zambia want to bring an action against Vedanta in the UK courts as Vedanta is a UK

registered company. Formerly listed and supported by the FCA as well as the UK governement who have

lobbied in Indai on its behalf, Vedanta de-listed itself last August as it seemed certain otherwise to have been

shortly delisted over a massacre of Indian protesters against the company's activities there.

Foil Vedanta, who organised this protest, published an extensive and damning report on the company's activities

last Summer, and several years ago uncovered its false accounting in Zambia showing it to be making

considerable profits there while reporting a loss to the Zambian government to avoid taxes.
