Stoke Newington to Hackney Wick
London. Thu 30 May 2019
Stoke Newington High St
Madame Lillie is still on Cazenove Rd, though no longer the shop it
was
Further down the road are large, solid semis
Springfield Park is high above the Lea Valley, with distant views
of nothing much
Springfield House has a cafe and toilets
The park slopes down to the River Lea/Lea Navigation
We turned right when we reached the path by the canal where the route
goes left
We walked down as far as the pub, but I wasn't feeling up to having
a drink, so we just walked back
We needed to take the bridge over the canal
and walk along the tow path
This was once a pub
And The Anchor & Hope still is, though now there was a river between
it and us
We could see the plaque for A V Roe who built the first all British
aeroplane hre
Belties keeping the grass down on the marsh
The main traffic on the Lea Navigation was timber and these flats
are on a former timber yards
I photographed this bridge in 1983, when there was still a timber
yard here
Lea Bridge Road
The River Lea runs off off to the east of the navigation through the
gates here
A locked gate into the Middlesex Filter Beds, now a nature reserve
'Ackney Enge'. These blocks once supported the beam engine in the
Engine House of the waterworks
and is now an art work, Nature's Throne
The River Lea
and the other side of the gates through which the river flows from
the combined river and navigation
a pipe bridge over the River Lea
a large circular yard within the waterworks site. We made a detour
and spent some time walking around the filter bends
