March against fascism in India

London. Sat 25 Jan 2020

 People line up behind the banner 'United Against Fascism in India'

 and they shout slogans against fascism in India and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act of the Hindu fascist Modi regime

 The march sets off, going slowly up Whitehall, with a number of halts

 and the students stop the march, insisting that the main banner be held by women

 and more women come to the front to hold it

 The march continues up Whitehall

 People are closely packed on the march

 On the Strand I go into the march to take some pictures - of groups of men

 of women and children

 A woman holds a poster with the frame of the Indian constition

 The Indian Workers Association GB banner from Southall - established 1938

 London Anti-Fascist Assembly

 Tamil Solidarity

 A woman carries a placard about the CAB (now passed and so the CAA) saying it 'Violates Secular Principles of Indian Constitution

 The front of the march stops in front of the Indian High Commision

 and people line up along the barriers facing the embassy

 They sing the Indian National Anthem and raise fists. This is a pro-India protest against the fascist regime.

 and they give Modi a 'thumbs down'

 For some Muslims it is time to pray

 A man reads out the preamble to the Indian Constitution in short phrases, and the crowd shout them after him.
 The Constitution of India came into effect on Republic Day, 26 January 1970, 50 years ago, though the words
  'socialist' and 'secular' were added in 1976.

  It begins:

'WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR
DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens:
   JUSTICE, social, economic and political;
   LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;
   EQUALITY of status and of opportunity;
and to promote among them all
   FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation;'
