Green Anti-Capitalists Rally Against Capital

Stock Exchange, London. Fri 28 Feb 2020

By the time I cought up with the protesters at the Stock Exchange the protest there was in full swing

I think some police had been there waiting for the protesters and another van drew up as I arrived

There was enough red smoke at times to make it hard to see and difficult to take photographs or breathe.

Some protesters rushed around to the Paternoster Square entrance and I followed them more slowly

One woman had been held by police officers behind the police line in front of the Stock Exchange entrance

and they were grappling with her while her comrades outside demanded her release.

Police continually shouted at the protesters and most held their batons in a threatening fashion

The police continued to have trouble trying to subdue and handcuff the protester

 More smoke drifted across

The woman was clearly suffering some pain

There was a determined attempt to break the police line and rescue her, but

the police managed to hold them and push them back. It was rather dark for action pictures and few of mine

were usuable, partly becuase of the pushing by both police and protesters

The protest had closed both street entrances to the Stock Exchange

Some of the police had clearly become too involved and it looked as if they might need medical attention

The stalemate was still continuing when I left. The protesters had stopped police trying to bring their areested
comrade out to a waiting police van, but seemed unlikely to be able to rescue her. Nobody seemed to know why

police had arrested her and not the other protesters. I was told later that after I left there were three other arrests, one
of someone who tried to hand biscuits to those held by police.
