july started for me with the annual pride march. this year it was probably the smallest i've attended, and was a rather sad event compared to previous years.
it was enlivened a little by some visitors from Brazil, but the whole thing
seems to be more of a commercial event now. much less fun and joy.

cruelty in farming is something we can all oppose, even if we are not veggies. although the viva event was meant to unite different groups, there was too much fanaticism around for that to really work.
few of the speakers seemed to be trying to approach the issues rationally,
and they were simply whipping up the converted.

despite my sympathies with most of their concerns, the Muslim organised march against war made me feel uneasy.
the demonstrators were lined up in neat rows on the squared paving, following the coloured computer printouts, with marshals to enforce the arrangement if anyone got out of line.
couples and families who arrived together were separated into the separate
mens and womens areas.

protestors brought genetically modified plants uprooted from the various field trials to the door of DEFRA in Whitehall in bags marked as bio-hazards. The whole rush into gm foods seems a hasty and ill-thought out experiment designed to profit the biotech companies but without real consideration of the long-term effects.
its a genie that can never be put back in the bottle.
a ministry official listened politely to the speeches, taking an occasional
note, and made an incredibly bland statement about the government listening
to all the evidence and not having yet made up its mind on the issue.
