my london diary

jun 2000

june was a strange month. bermondsey is an inner city area with a carnival, mainly made up of kids from local youth groups.

jubilee 2000 were again raising the issue of debt in trafalgar square.

one of the events that attracted most photographers was a demonstration against the monarchy outside buckinham palace. the photographers probably outnumbered the police, who certainly outnumbered the demonstrators, who seemed a nice enough bunch. after a lot of fairly inconsequential standing around, with police issuing dire warnings, trousers were dropped, skirts were lifted and a photographers formed a disorderly scrum. pure farce ensued when a police grab squad rushed in and arrested an innocent scandanavian journalist who had a very slight resemblance to one of the leading protestors (well, they both wore glasses!)

i hope he managed to talk his way out of it.
