CUMBRIAN INTERLUDE: Cumbrian Coast

Alauna & Maryport, Cumbria. August 2010


 
 Sandstone at the north end of Maryport - the red colour is due to the high iron content

 Sheep graze at the edge of the Roman fort of Alauna

 Only these few stones - the north gateway - of the fort remain. The rest were used to build Maryport

  The closer stone is in its original position and next to it is a stone with grooves made by Roman cart wheels
