Heygate Estate Scandal

Heygate Estate, Elephant & Castle, London. Sunday 5 June 2011

You can just see the double yellow lines on the road below the pedestrian street

There are some signs like this, but much that shows people cherished their homes here

Large slabs around the edges of the estate helped keep out noise - and inside were gardens with trees and shrubs

People who started to grow crops on the unused land were at first threatened by the council who later relented

Ashenden, the large slab at right, virtually cuts out noise and pollution from the very busy New Kent Road

There was less graffiti than I expected on the estate

A paved square with some mature trees

The scale is rather intimidating, but has its advantages

Childrens activities next to a small park area while locals were discussing future possibilities for the area

More of the "illegal gardening"

A grassy area with trees and bushes which have been left to grow unchecked
