Air Pollution Protest Blocks Brixton

Brixton, London. Thu 14 Sep 2017

People meet at Windrush Square for the first 'Stop Killing Londoners' road block in Brixton

The have large posters telling drivers why the protest is takeing place and that it will only last a few minutes

Among those taking part are four mothers with young children - greatly at risk from air pollution

Most of London's air pollution comes from the heavy traffic on our streets

and the worst effects are on young children, the elderly and those with lung problems

People move off to walk to where the protest will take place

and wait for everyone to be ready at the busiest crossing in Brixton, in front of the Underground station

They walk onto the crossing to begin the protest

and block the road, though a few motorcylists make their way through or round the protest

One protester wears a gas mask

and another speaks over the public address system they have brought about the critically high pollution levels

on our streets that result in 10,000 premature deaths a year in London

Children in buggies suffer more as pollution is higher close to the ground

The protesters ask drivers to cut their engines and reassure them the protest will only last a few minutes, but some
still get rather angry.
