Whitehaven

Whitehaven, Cumbria. Mon 3 Sep 2018

There were a few rain clouds still passing across Grike when I got up. We decided it might be a good day to

visit the museum at Whitehave and see the town, so drove to Tesco there

then walked alongside the harbour. There are still a few small boats fishing from Whitehaven.

and a couple of slightly larger vessels

a derelict building by the harbour was formerly the swimming baths

 with some suitable decoration

'Established 1858' this building has a beehive on its pediment and was the Co-operative store, probably late Victorian

Duke St - John Whittle and Sons Ltd ceased trading recently after 150 years. This Grade II listed building is dated 1889.

The funny wavy bit of metal seems to be just that - and entirely pointless

Whitehaven has around 170 listed buildings, and many fine examples that are not listed but would be in other towns

 Former Waterworks building

The Beacon Museum, opened in 1996 was saved from closure by Sellafield and a display filling one floor covers their work

 Old Customs House

 The Waterfront

A mine ventilation chimney supposedly designed to look like a chair leg in the Lowther home

a dinosaur greets visitors to the Becan Museum where they had a Lego show in the temporary exhibition spaces

The top floor of the Beacon gallery gives good views over the town

and over the harbour, as well as explaining how the harbour was developed over many years
