BBC to Royal Courts of Justice, 23 Oct 2021

more pictures

Campaigners march from the BBC to the High Court calling for the release of Julian Assange. A judge ruled in January that he could not be extradited to the US as it would be oppressive given his mental health as he would probably be held near-solitary confinement in a "supermax" prison but he was denied bail pending an appeal by the US to be heard next week. He has now been in Belmarsh maximum-security prison in London since April 2019.

CAAT say NO to the Saudi Grand Prix

London, 16th October 2021

more pictures

London Campaign Against Arms Trade protest outside the Formula One London Headquarters against the Grand Prix to be held in Saudi Arabia this December. They say Saudi Arabia has an appalling human rights record and should not be able to sports-wash away the repression of either its own citizens or the horrific outcomes from the Saudi led attacks on Yemen, and F1 should end its association with the country. The F1 HQ is in a backstreet, deserted on Saturdays, so they then moved on to continue the protest at Piccadilly Circus.

Swanscombe Walk

Swanscombe, Kent, 13th October 2021

more pictures

I went back to the Swanscombe peninsula, where plans to set up a Disney-style theme park seem to be currently on hold, but not abandoned. Partly because parts of the site have been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest the developers are rethinking their plans and will probably make a revised planning application shortly. I think they may well abandon the idea of a leisure attraction and instead concentrate on housing, with luxury riverside flats and houses behind. It would still be development that would destroy the current attractive wilderness of this largely post-industrial site.

I had gone with the intention of making a series of panoramic images from roughly 10 foot above ground level at various locations, but had technical problems and had to abandon that. The image above, taken on Pilgrim's Road is one of the few I managed, but I made a number of other photographs from a more normal eye level.

After walking around the area with two friends we made our way to a pub in Greenhithe before catching a train back to Dartford for a meal there.
